ALL WORK & ALL PLAY

Behind the Mise en Scène with Jon & Joy

Story by WolfAmongWheat July 7th, 2014

big day before the big day

With 3-weeks to plan and a humble team of five – set design, décor, wardrobe, and hair/makeup were carefully orchestrated to recreate a beautiful ‘afternoon at home’ with Jon & Joy. These are a few production stills:

The idea behind our shoot was to break away from the conventional outdoor and into the intimate confines of the home. My advice: do something that reflects both of you. We are artistic creatures and we wanted something a bit more editorial.

We’ve always loved magazine spread shots in Vogue, Vanity Fair and especially enjoy the work of Annie Leibovitz. Our idea began with collecting tear sheets from magazines and studying how to embody characters of shows we loved: Madmen, Homeland, House of Cards just to name a few. All of them shared one thing, very strong male and female leads with distinctive characteristics. We wanted to capture ourselves in everyday situations and glam it up, capturing a slice of our life… fantasized.

Our wish was to make the camera invisible, any attention to the camera would be accidental or to look directly at the viewer. These behind-the-mise-en-scènes capture the in-between stolen moments of waiting, prepping, makeup time and set up – capturing these shots were as important as the final shots themselves.

Footnote: Today was 100˚F outside, so we played indoors. It was a good day.
